Obene Winery Tsolikauri
Floral, spiced and endlessly surprising — this is an amber wine that unfolds like a story, revealing new layers with every sip. Tsolikauri is one of West Georgia's most treasured and near-extinct indigenous grape varieties, and this 2018 expression from Obene Winery in Mukhuri is a wine of extraordinary elegance and complexity. Aged six months in Qvevri buried in open earth beneath the shade of trees, it opens with delicate fruit and florals before blossoming into warm cinnamon, frangipane and speculaas spice — a combination so unexpected and so beautiful it stops you mid-sentence.
Grape Variety 100% Tsolikauri — a rare and near-extinct indigenous Georgian white grape from the Samegrelo region of West Georgia, one of the most ancient and characterful varieties in Georgia's remarkable viticultural heritage. Handpicked with meticulous care to honour every nuance of this irreplaceable variety.
Taste Profile Golden amber in the glass, luminous and inviting. The nose opens with delicate florals, white and yellow fruit and ripe quince — fresh, elegant and immediately captivating. As the wine breathes and opens, a second, warmer aromatic layer emerges — cinnamon, frangipane and speculaas spice that transform the experience entirely. On the palate the wine is supple and full, beautifully balanced with bright natural acidity, generous fruit and a refined, elegant bitterness. The finish is long and layered — fruit-driven with a subtle, lingering smokiness that draws you back for another sip.
Craftsmanship Handpicked from Obene Winery's vineyards in Mukhuri, Mingrelia, this 2018 vintage is crafted using the traditional Kakhetian Qvevri technique with exceptional care. The grapes are pressed without stems and fermented for 8–9 days in contact with one third of the grape seeds, then transferred to fresh Qvevri to age without seeds. After six weeks the wine moves to a third set of Qvevri for natural filtration, resting for a further six months. As with all Obene wines, the Qvevri are buried outside in open earth — shaded by trees growing beside them — a practice as ancient and poetic as the wine itself.
Serving Suggestions A refined and elegant food wine. Pairs beautifully with white fish in beurre blanc sauce, asparagus and delicate vegetable dishes. Best served at 10–12°C. Alcohol: 13.6% — 750ml.
